Detailed description of Stephen F. Austin Country Club

Stephen F. Austin Country Club is a Semi-Private, 18 hole golf course located in San Felipe, Texas.

Stephen F. Austin golf course opened in 1954. The back nine of this course was built in 1970 and is a little more open than the front nine.

Stephen F. Austin Golf Club is a long-time favorite, especially for players on the west side of Houston, for its scenic setting along the Brazos River. The course is set in a pecan tree farm (still harvested every fall) and is very tight. The trees lining almost every fairway seem to be the biggest hazards on this course. However, water hazards (ponds and creeks) have also been incorporated into this course's design

While there's only one par-5 over 500 yards and the par-4s range from 311 to 400 yards max, Stephen F., as it's known to regulars, draws its challenge from the tree-lined fairways and three of its par-3s that range from 184 to 205 yards. There are four forced carries due to Bollinger Creek, which runs through the course.

Featuring the natural contours of the land with several small streams, and tightly placed among several thousand native pecan trees, the present 18-hole course teems with wildlife. Several generations of white-tail deer live in this heavily wooded triangle bounded by the Brazos River and a state park. On any given day as golfers admire the narrow tree-lined fairways and struggle with the relatively small greens protected by sand traps, they will probably see more deer than birdies. But, be alert, occasionally a player spots an eagle.

Blue tees: par-70, 5,800 yards, 66.3 /112
White tees: par-70, 5,605 yards, 62.8 / 110
Red tees: par-70, 5,061 yards, 69.7 / 116

We played this course on March 2nd, 2011, and found it to be in pretty good condition for this time of year. It should be very nice by the middle of April, with the grass and a very abundance of large trees looking much better. The greens are good, fast and true. The course is not long, but offers a good challenge for the better player due to the tree-lined fairways.

The course is in the country near the Brazos River, the greens are for the most part small and well kept. They are usually pretty fast. The fairways are lines with very large trees and though not lush by any means, pretty typical for courses in this area. There are no structures of any kind around the course, save the pro-shop and a maintenance area between a couple of the fairways. The staff is extraordinary. They are cooperative, friendly and outgoing, just as you would expect from a course in a small town. I've recommended it to several people and except for the drive, all have been happy with the course and pace of play.

Not a course for the long hitter as the course is narrow and short. Lots of doglegs and layup drives to corners. Lots of fun and challenging if you are not a big hitter. Loads of wildlife and nice scenery abound. Greens ran true and pretty quick. Fairways are narrow. Lots of 3 woods to 4 irons off the tee box. Good overall course for the price!
